Declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1949, it is considered one of the most imposing fortresses in Galicia. Although its origins date back to the 12th century, it was commissioned by Ferdinand II, King of Galicia and León, and its modern structure dates from the mid-17th century. It was built by the Portuguese as a consequence of the Portuguese Restoration War, which is evidenced, on both sides of the Miño River and up to its mouth, by a series of border defensive complexes.
